📅 Thoughts of the Month
Last time I wrote about committing to finishing work instead of endlessly refining it. Since then, I’ve actually followed through. One track from last year is finished and sent to labels, another is close behind, and I’m back in the phase I enjoy most: making new ideas without pressure.
The biggest shift hasn’t been technical, it’s been psychological. Once something is finished and out of my head, it stops draining energy. Finish a track, learn from it and improve on the next one. Perfectionism can be a blessing or a curse, and in my case it’s the latter.
Momentum creates clarity.
One thing that’s helped massively during this phase is having a group of like minded producers to share feedback with. After listening to your own music hundred or thousands of times, it becomes almost impossible to hear it objectively. Fresh ears are invaluable, not just for feedback, but for knowing when a track is actually ready to be released.
🎵What I’ve been working on
This month I:
Finished a track and sent it out to labels
Currently finishing another track
Started new ideas with no pressure to finish them perfectly
The goal right now is simple, keep the pipeline moving.
Finished music creates space for new ideas. Unfinished music creates noise and stagnation.
💾 New Tools & Creative Fuel
Plugins:
– Logic Pro Midi Effects Scripter
Something I saw on Instagram that’s changing the way I make arps. A few tweaks in Scripted can create patterns I’d never naturally play in, great for breaking habits and getting ideas moving quickly. Try the settings below if you want to experiment with it yourself.

Vocalfy:
I’ve used Vocalfy for a while now, and it’s become a core part of my idea writing process. Working with singer/songwriters can be expensive if you’re not operating on royalty splits, and for song led music, having a vocal to build around makes a huge difference.
Using Vocalfy lets me sketch full songs quickly. Yes, other producers can use the same vocal, but the production choices are what make a track unique. I’ll often build an entire record around a vocal and then remove it and work with a singer once the song is fully formed. It means you’re pitching a finished track, not just an idea. I’ve also used this same process with remixes. My track with Mike Kelly, Happy Tonight started as a remix before pitching to Mike.

💭 Creative Insight
An old song to new ears…
A release date doesn’t diminish the emotional impact of music. Most listeners don’t know when a song was made, they only know how it makes them feel the first time they hear it.
You’ll notice some of my playlist additions are years old, but I didn’t know that when I discovered them, and it didn’t matter. So don’t be afraid to reshare, repost or promote older music of your own. There are countless people who haven’t heard it yet and it might just be their new favourite song.
💿 Playlist Picks
Here are a few tracks that have been on heavy rotation for me this month. You can find these and many more on my monthly playlist Line In with Lexton.
Leven Kali - Sleepwalking
Instant funk vibes. I first heard Leven Kali on Disclosure, Chris Lake & Leven Kali - one2three. Definitely diving deeper into his catalogue.
Mr Belt & Wezol - Dopamine (feat. Malou)
The perfect feel-good dopaminergic track.
Bob Moses & CRi - Keep Love Waiting
I could have added the entire album to this month’s playlist. Highly recommend giving a listen from front to back.
