📅 Thoughts of the Month

This month I’ve been thinking a lot about the phrase:
“The process is the goal.”

Say it a few times with different emphasis:

The process IS the goal.
The PROCESS is the goal.
The process is THE GOAL.

It changes how you think about your work. For me, it pulls the attention away from outcomes and perfectionism, and back into the act of producing itself.

Another idea that has stuck with me recently is the taste and talent gap. Your taste develops faster than your skill, which can be frustrating when you know what you want to make but can’t yet execute it. I feel this a lot when it comes to mixing. But the only way to close the gap is practice. Showing up. Iteration. That’s the work.

And if the process is the goal, then practice is enough.

🎵What I’ve been working on

This month has been about finishing tracks and sending them to labels. No signings yet, but I’m realising that simply finishing tracks is a habit worth building. Each completed track is a step forward, even if it never sees release.

I’ve also been catching up with collaborators, lining up sessions to finish ideas we’ve been sitting on. There’s something motivating about knowing you’re not creating in isolation and a lot can be learned from others.

💾 New Tools & Creative Fuel

Youtube:
Chris Lake’s stream - easily one of my favourite remix sessions I’ve watched. Eye-opening.

Creative Tip:
Listen to genres outside of what you produce. Borrowing unexpected elements can lead to some of your most unique tracks.

💭 Creative Insight

Rick Rubin said it best: “One of the best strategies is to lower the stakes.”

I’ve been leaning into this more. When I’ve watched streams of artists I admire, what stands out is how much fun they’re having. Sometimes they make magic, sometimes they don’t, but it’s always good practice.

Lower the stakes. Play. That’s when ideas start to flow.

💿 Playlist Picks

Here are a few tracks that have been on heavy rotation for me this month. You can find these and many more on my monthly playlist Line In with Lexton.

  • Madeon - Hi!

The start of a new Madeon era. Distorted guitars and grunge-rock energy give this one a raw edge, and it’s got me excited to hear what the rest of the album will sound like when it drops.

  • Peacemode - Come Back Baby (feat. LP)

A project from singer/songwriter Joe Janiak. You might recognise his work with Avicii (Bad Reputation, Never Leave Me) or Kygo (Follow). This one features LP, whose music is worth diving into if you haven’t already.

  • The Chainsmokers - Smooth

This one’s been on repeat for me. It feels like the duo are tapping back into those 2016 era vibes.
